One of my fun projects at the moment is as vice-president of the board of Riverrock House which is a not-for-profit educational endeavor to build the last ever house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Riverrock represents the only place in the world where an unbuilt Wright design still has the original property for which it was designed and is still owned by the original client family. The plans were delivered to Willoughby Hills, Ohio, just after Wright’s death in 1959, and by registration number, it represents the last project he worked on.

We are currently at the pre-construction study phase and hope to break ground later in 2012. For the whole story, go to www.riverrockhouse.com.

A client last year asked me to help set up a series of two-hour programs which would use technical and subject matter experts as trainers. Most of these people had done no or very little training and were too busy to go through a train-the-trainer session. I put together a one page summary of the eight top ideas to think about as they prepared their program. That’s available using the following link: downloadable summary…

A few of the individuals who were really conscientious wanted some more help, so I created a more detailed step-by-step process for them to use in developing their two-hour program. If you’d like to get a copy of this, use the “contact us” link below and ask for the instructor’s guidelines handout.

I was pleased to be asked to do a feature article for ASTD’s publication, T+D. The magazine is delivered to about 70,000 people in the workplace learning and performance field each month. The request came out of my May, 2011 presentation at ASTD’s International Conference and Exposition in Chicago. While attendance at the 7:00 a.m. program was only about two dozen people, I also participated in the Higher Education interest group meeting and met a number of great folks who are trying to bring together the worlds of organizational training and higher education. My article is titled, “Split Personalities: Academic vs. Organizational Training,” and it appeared in the January, 2012 issue. To learn more about T+D, go to ASTD Publications.

In the last couple years I’ve been teaching for Cleveland State University’s Train the Trainer program. It was housed in Continuing Education, but this year was moved to The College of Education and Human Services. A total of seven one-day programs will earn a certificate in organizational training and development. In updating the way I present the program evaluation portion of the series, I created a case study on ROI (return on investment). This is a measure of whether or not a training program was cost effective. Here’s a link to the case study, if you’re interested. It comes in 3 parts, all of which are available at the link, but do them one at a time:

Part 1: Brainstorming when to do assessments

Part 2: Suggested answers to table in Part 1

Part 3: Costs and benefits of training

If you’d like to check your final answer, e-mail me and I’ll share it with you.
